Argentina conquered the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, and this was the first time for a South American country to achieve Olympic gold. The preparation for this tournament was extremely hard but Argentina displayed a level of fitness that was above the rest.
The style of play was simple: good circle defence, safe ball distribution, outstanding individual offensive skills and a high percentage of penalty corner scoring. Players like Gonzalo Peillat and Pedro Ibarra (captain), dominated each opponent’s defence with their drag flicks.
Juan Manuel Vivaldi, the Argentina goalkeeper, had the best tournament of his life sealing the goal of his team like never before. The intensity and speed of game made Argentina a dominant team in the world, currently placed in the 2nd place of the FIH World Ranking.
