The Hockeyroos are tired of being mistaken for the Kookaburras at the Olympics!
When the Olympic Games happen, many non-hockey specialist journalist are faced with the dilemma of writing about our complex sport. That’s ok, but it wouldn’t hurt to ask around before writing wrong things, for example, last week the Daily Mirror published an article about the facemasks which was blasted by the hockey community. In this case, we hear that the Hockeyroos, the Australian Women’s National Team, is tired of being confused with the Kookaburras, Australia Men’s National Team.
Hockey Australia has released this graphic in order to show some of those unaware journalist, the difference between the Hockeyroos and the Kookaburras:
International commentators and journalists continue to mix up the nicknames as they follow the respective teams through their Rio campaigns. Forward Georgie Parker, a 27-year-old Commonwealth Games gold medallist, says the Hockeyroos are “getting kind of sick of it”. In a Facebook post she demanded respect for Australia’s hockey stars, saying Australia’s Matildas soccer team would never be confused with the Socceroos.
She said: “We gave you grace when you mistook the Kookaburras for the Hockeyroos after the boys won the world cup 6-1. We had a little giggle when you said Jamie Dwyer was the best Hockeyroo of all time. We politely told Sunrise the world no. 1 Kookaburras were visiting some tourists sites in Rio, not the Hockeyroos. But we’re kinda getting sick of it. Hockey, as much as you Australian journalists and media outlets might think, is one of the biggest sports in the world.”
