Are female hockey shorts “too sexy” for school?

Are women’s hockey shorts or skirts too sexy to wear in school? Well, there is a Virginia high school that enforced a dress code by forcing girls not to wear their ‘provocative’ field hockey uniforms to class.

This is the story of Lydia Cleveland, who happened to be a senior at a Chesterfield County during 2015 and she spoke out against her school’s ‘sexist’ rules.

Herself and her teammates were penalised for wearing the typical hockey shorts to class, however she claimed that her male classmates didn’t face the same consequences.

While the athletic shorts were approved for the field, school officials took issue with the girls wearing them in the hallways, forcing them to change into embarrassing sweatpants that read ‘dress code’ down one leg.

‘I’ve seen boys in athletic shorts and girls aren’t allowed to wear them,’ Lydia said. ‘This is telling our bright young women that it is their fault when they are sexualized in the eyes of other people. Absolutely the young ladies are being targeted.’

‘If you’re going to have a dress code with rules for both genders, enforce it among both genders,’ Lydia added. She also finds the punishment in question – those humiliating ‘dress code’ sweatpants – to be similar to forcing young women to wear a scarlet letter.  ‘The fact that shame is being used as a punishment is completely wrong to me,’ she said.
