How to receive bouncing balls in field hockey?
This video by Jeroen Hertzberger, sheds some light on how to receive bouncing balls in field hockey:
The first method is trapping the ball horizontally, and you must have your body turned so you can receive the ball while continuing your run. The right hand is at the bottom of the grip for a more athletic and dynamic posture.
Finally you must bring your body down to easily judge the ball’s depth and position.
The second method is trapping the ball more vertically. You must get your body in the line of the ball and set yourself behind it. This method increases the chance of receiving the ball, especially in games with longer passes and higher speeds. Remember to create a position with your left arm forward and stick vertical to ensure the bouncing pass is in line. Let the ball bounce off and then jump down to trap it.
Finally, while the horizontal trapping has the body horizontal with the left shoulder forward, the vertical trapping has the face frontal to where the ball is coming from, with the left foot forward to trap the ball effectively.
