The team attitude towards the relationship is just “normal” although they are aware that the situation might be a bit unusual, and most likely, they will receive a lot of attention by the media as they are the first married gay couple to compete at the Olympics. Kate hopes that there are thousands more in the future and she adds: “You dye your hair blonde, you dye your hair brown, you’re with a man, you’re with a woman. Who cares? You’re just in love with who you are in love with and that’s the end of it.”

At the 2012 London Olympics, both were able to win the bronze medal. In Rio 2016, the belief is that the leadership displayed by both Kate and Helen, can help Team GB to reach the Olympic podium again. “We have the capability to win a gold medal with this team and I think every one of us believes that,” says Kate.

After the Olympic Games, both will move to Holland, where they have both signed two-year deals with leading club side Bloemendaal. It is very possible that after Rio 2016, both will be retiring from international hockey and it will be the moment to say goodbye to their teammates, which have always been supportive of their marriage – the entire squad was invited to their wedding – but never afraid to wind them up about it.
