Boys field hockey in USA: The inspiring story of Matthew and Keeling
Boys field hockey in USA has been challenging to promote and to grow, however, it has been tougher for those male hockey lovers that are playing the sport. In USA, hockey is a female sport. Not just socially considered as such but, even worse, officially considered by many high schools and college associations, as a “genetically” targeted sport for women. Despite of all there are some amazing and inspirational cases of boys who love our sport and are ready to make it grow…
These are the stories of two male hockey players who fell in love with our game and had to struggle, still do, in order to be allowed to play this sport in their home country.
Men’s Field Hockey in USA – The story on the media:
Matthew Bozdech, from St. Louis, stumbled into the sport at a young age. He was playing hockey (and please notice that “real” hockey worldwide is named hockey, not referred to as “FIELD” hockey), as an alternative to ice hockey but in the end, his love for our form of hockey was bigger.
Keeling Pilaro, from Southampton, NY, originally raised in Ireland, until his family eventually moved to Long Island. He had grown up playing hockey in Europe.
Despite of all the struggles and challenges, their love for the sport only grew bigger and bigger. In the end, they decided to challenge the system in order to keep on playing. Boys field hockey in USA is growing and developing, as matter of fact Keeling Pilaro made it to the junior national team.
